We love nature yet fear it; we admire its beauty yet try to control it; we are part of it yet seek to rise above it. Writers, artists, scientists, and philosophers have wrestled with these contradictions, leaving behind a rich body of environmental literature, essays, memoirs, poetry, and fiction.
